Description and uses

Plutonium is the 94th element of the periodic table. It was discovered in 1940 by a research team including Glenn Seaborg when they bombarded uranium with alpha particles. Its main use is in nuclear power and warheads, as it is a fissile element (ie it can easily undergo nuclear fission). Its longest living isotope is 244Pu, with a half life of around 81 million years.
